Why Your Hands Age Faster Than Your Face — And What to Do About It

Most of us invest thought into our face skincare. Cleansers, serums, SPF — the face gets attention. The hands, which are just as exposed and in many ways more vulnerable, are largely ignored until the signs of ageing are already visible. By then, catching up takes real effort.

The Biology Behind Hand Ageing

Hand skin is structurally different from facial skin in several important ways:

  • Thinner dermis — the dermis on the back of the hands is significantly thinner than on the face, with less collagen and elastin to provide structural support. Volume loss and wrinkling therefore appear earlier and more dramatically.
  • Fewer sebaceous glands — while the face produces natural oils that provide some protection, the back of the hands has very few sebaceous glands. This means no built-in moisturisation — what little protection the hands have comes entirely from what you apply.
  • High UV exposure — hands are almost always unprotected from the sun while the face often has SPF in makeup or moisturiser. Cumulative UV damage accelerates both the appearance of age spots and the breakdown of collagen.

The Washing Problem

Modern life involves washing your hands many times per day. Each wash, especially with hot water or foaming soap, strips the small amount of lipid protection the skin has. If you work in healthcare, food service, or cleaning, this can happen dozens of times daily. The barrier is perpetually disrupted before it has time to recover.

Cold and Wind Exposure

In the UK, hands are frequently exposed to cold wind, especially in autumn and winter. Cold air is low in humidity, and wind accelerates transepidermal water loss from already-vulnerable skin. Many people notice their hands becoming red, cracked, or even bleeding at the knuckles in winter — a sign of severe barrier disruption.

What Actually Helps

The solution for hand skin is the same as for any barrier-compromised skin — but it needs to be delivered in a form that survives repeated handwashing:

  • Rich, occlusive emollients that physically seal the barrier
  • Fatty acids that integrate into and repair the lipid matrix
  • Consistent application — ideally after each wash and before bed
  • An SPF during the day for the back of the hands (underused and highly effective for preventing age spots)

The key is regularity. One application of a rich cream won't undo years of neglect, but twice-daily application over a few weeks will produce visible improvement in texture and comfort.

Your hands deserve as much care as your face.
