Why Grass-Fed Ghee Is the Gold Standard for Skincare

Not all ghee is created equal. The provenance of the milk, the diet of the cattle, and the method of preparation can vary enormously. In skincare, these differences matter more than most people realise. Grass-fed ghee represents the highest standard available.

What Makes Ghee "Grass-Fed"?

Grass-fed ghee is made from the butter of cows that graze on pasture — eating their natural diet of grass rather than grain or processed feed. This distinction affects the nutritional composition of the milk, and therefore the ghee derived from it, in meaningful ways.

Higher Levels of Fat-Soluble Vitamins

Grass-fed dairy is consistently higher in fat-soluble vitamins — particularly vitamin K2 and beta-carotene (a precursor to vitamin A) — compared to grain-fed dairy. For skincare, vitamins A, D, E and K are all active participants in skin biology: cell turnover, barrier homeostasis, antioxidant protection, and cellular repair.

A Better Fatty Acid Balance

Research consistently shows that grass-fed dairy contains a more favourable ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids. This ratio influences the inflammatory balance within skin cells. Grass-fed ghee also contains higher concentrations of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a naturally occurring fatty acid with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
