Why Ayurvedic Skincare Doesn't Need to Be Complicated

Every time I mention Ayurveda in conversation, I watch a familiar expression cross people's faces. A slight wariness. The assumption that what follows will involve determining their dosha, sourcing sixteen specific ingredients, and rearranging their entire routine around the lunar calendar.

I understand why. A lot of the Ayurveda content that's made its way into Western wellness culture is, frankly, a bit much. Complicated, inaccessible, and sometimes more about aesthetic than substance.

But here's what I actually learned from my grandmother: Ayurvedic skincare, at its best, is profoundly simple.

You Don't Need to Know Your Dosha

The dosha system — vata, pitta, kapha — is a fascinating framework for understanding constitution and tendencies, and if it interests you, I encourage you to explore it. But you absolutely do not need to know your dosha to benefit from Ayurvedic skincare ingredients.

Washed ghee nourishes skin. Full stop. It's rich in vitamins and fatty acids, it supports the skin barrier, it absorbs well, and it has been used safely on skin for centuries. You don't need a personalised consultation to use it. You just need to use it.

You Don't Need Twelve Steps

Leela's evening skincare routine involved roughly three things. Cool water. Washed ghee. Sometimes a small amount of oil. She did this consistently, with care, for decades. The results speak for themselves.

Consistency with a few good ingredients will always outperform inconsistency with many. This is not a particularly Ayurvedic insight — it's common sense — but Ayurveda has been making this point for a very long time.

Start With One Thing

If you're curious about incorporating Ayurvedic wisdom into your skincare but don't know where to begin, I'd suggest starting with a cleanser — specifically, one that cleans your face without stripping it.

Oil cleansing is one of the oldest principles in Ayurvedic skincare. The idea that a nourishing oil can dissolve impurities, remove makeup, and leave the skin clean without disrupting its natural barrier is both ancient and increasingly well-supported by modern dermatology. It's also one of the most immediately noticeable changes you can make to a skincare routine.

You don't need to overhaul everything. You just need one product you understand, used consistently, with care. That's Ayurveda in practice.

The Permission to Keep It Simple

One of the things I most want Inherited Skincare to do is give people permission to stop overcomplicating it. You don't need a regimen that takes forty minutes. You don't need to be an expert in ancient texts. You need good ingredients, used thoughtfully, night after night.

That's it. That's the whole secret.
