What is Ghee Skincare? The Ancient Ingredient Transforming Dry Skin in the UK
If you've been researching natural skincare and keep seeing the word 'ghee', you're not alone. Ghee-based skincare is one of the fastest-growing trends in natural beauty — and unlike most trends, this one has a 5,000-year track record behind it.
What is ghee?
Ghee is clarified butter — butter that has been slowly simmered until all the water and milk solids are removed, leaving behind pure, golden butterfat. It's been a cornerstone of Ayurvedic medicine and cooking in South Asia for thousands of years.
When organic ghee is washed with purified water (a traditional process called taila-paka), it transforms. The washing process extracts excess fat-soluble compounds and concentrates the nourishing properties that make ghee so remarkable for skin.
Why is ghee different from other moisturisers?
Most moisturisers — even expensive ones — work only on the surface of your skin. They deposit a layer of hydration that feels good immediately but fades within hours because it never penetrates past the top epidermal layer.
Ghee is structurally unique. Its molecular composition allows it to penetrate all seven layers of skin — from the stratum corneum all the way to the dermis. This is why Ayurvedic texts describe it as the only substance that can truly nourish the skin from within.
The science behind ghee skincare
Modern science has begun to validate what Ayurvedic practitioners have known for millennia:
- Fatty acid profile: Ghee is rich in oleic acid, linoleic acid and butyric acid — all proven to support the skin's lipid barrier and prevent transepidermal water loss.
- Butyric acid: A short-chain fatty acid with potent anti-inflammatory properties. Studies show it can calm inflammation and reduce redness in sensitive skin.
- Fat-soluble vitamins: Ghee contains vitamins A, D, E and K — antioxidants that protect against environmental damage and support healthy skin cell turnover.
- Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA): Found in grass-fed ghee, CLA supports collagen production and skin elasticity.
What does ghee skincare do?
When used consistently, ghee-based skincare:
- Deeply hydrates and plumps dry, dehydrated skin
- Repairs a compromised skin barrier
- Calms redness and irritation
- Reduces the appearance of dark spots and pigmentation
- Softens fine lines without clogging pores
- Leaves skin feeling soft and non-greasy
Is ghee skincare suitable for all skin types?
Yes — but it's particularly transformative for dry, sensitive and mature skin. Its anti-inflammatory properties make it one of the safest options for the most reactive skin types. Customers regularly tell us it's the first product that hasn't triggered a flare-up.
Why we use washed ghee at Inherited Skincare
Our founder Suruchi grew up watching her grandmother Leela use washed ghee as her daily skincare ritual. The results spoke for themselves. Every Inherited Skincare product is formulated with washed, organic ghee as the hero ingredient — combined with carefully chosen modern actives to create formulas that are ancient in wisdom and proven in practice.
Our products are CPSR safety tested, cruelty-free, and made in the UK. We never use parabens, sulphates or synthetic fragrances.
