UK Tap Water vs Your Skin Barrier: What Every British Woman Should Know

Most skincare conversations focus on what you put on your skin. Very few address what you wash it with. In the UK, where a significant proportion of the population washes their face daily in water that is chemically very different from what their skin is designed to tolerate, this omission is consequential.

The geography of UK water hardness

According to the British Geological Survey, over 60% of England is supplied with hard or very hard water. London, Kent, Essex, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, and large parts of the Midlands all fall into the hard-water zone. By contrast, Scotland, Wales, and the North West of England sit largely on older granite that doesn't dissolve into the water supply.

pH: why your tap water is fighting your skin

The skin's surface has a natural pH of approximately 4.5–5.5 — mildly acidic. UK tap water typically has a pH of 7–8.5, which is alkaline. Every time you wash your face, you are temporarily raising your skin's surface pH. Chronically elevated skin pH reduces ceramide synthesis, alters the skin microbiome, and reduces the skin's antimicrobial defences.

What oil and balm cleansers do differently

Oil-based and balm-format cleansers function on a different principle — emulsification rather than surfactant chemistry. Because they don't rely on the chemical interaction between surfactant molecules and water, they are substantially less affected by water hardness. Ingredients like colloidal oat actively calm the inflammatory response that hard-water exposure can provoke, while washed organic ghee adds fatty acids that begin the process of lipid replacement at the cleansing step itself.
