The Ritual That Inspired a Thousand Jars: Leela's Evening Skincare Routine

My grandmother Leela begins every evening the same way. After dinner, after the washing up, after the day has wound itself down to a close — she disappears to her room, and there, alone with the small lamp on her dressing table, she tends to her skin.

I watched this ritual hundreds of times growing up. There was never anything rushed about it. No swiping, no multitasking, no scrolling while a product soaked in. It was simply her, and the ingredients, and a few quiet minutes before sleep. I didn't fully understand what I was watching until I was much older and had moved to another country entirely.

What She Used

Leela's routine was short by the standards of any beauty editor, and long by the standards of anyone who has ever paid attention to how she looks. She would begin by splashing her face with cool water from a copper vessel — she swore by the water, though I suspect what she was really doing was slowing down. Taking a moment to arrive in her body after a long day.

Then the ghee. The specific preparation she used — washed many times in cool water, worked until it became smooth and white and light — she kept in a small brass container. She would warm a fingertip's worth between her palms, breathe in, and work it gently across her face and neck. Not quickly. Never quickly. The warmth of her hands was part of it.

Some evenings she would add a tiny amount of kumkumadi oil to the ghee — a traditional Ayurvedic blend of saffron and other botanicals — pressed lightly into the skin around her eyes. She had no under-eye bags worth mentioning.

What the Ritual Actually Was

I've come to understand that Leela's evening routine was never only about the ingredients. It was a transition. A deliberate act of closing the day and caring for herself before sleep. The warmth of the lamp, the scent of the ghee, the quiet — these were as much a part of it as the nourishment itself.

Ayurveda has always understood that how you do something matters as much as what you use. Applying a product while stressed and distracted is different from applying the same product with intention and slowness. The skin feels the difference. I believe this absolutely, not because it's mystical, but because I've watched it.

What We Built From It

The Overnight Rejuvenation Cream is my attempt to bottle that evening ritual. It's richer than our daily cream — formulated to work with the skin's natural overnight repair cycle, delivering deep nourishment while you sleep. It's the last thing I put on before bed, every night. It smells, faintly and comfortingly, like something Leela would recognise.

Honour Your Evenings

The Overnight Rejuvenation Cream is designed for the ritual Leela taught me — slow, nourishing, intentional. Let it work while you sleep.
