The Real Reason Your Skin Feels So Dry on the London Underground

You've noticed it, even if you haven't named it. You step onto the Tube with skin that feels fine, and by the time you emerge at your stop, your face feels tight, your lips are dry, and your foundation looks like it's ageing in real time. The London Underground is one of the most hostile environments for skin that most people encounter daily.

The Tube's unique microclimate

Transport for London data shows that air on the London Underground — particularly the deep-level lines — can reach temperatures of 30°C or higher during summer, with relative humidity sometimes falling to 20–30%. A typical commuter spending 45–60 minutes on the Tube each way is exposing their skin to a hot, dry, high-particulate environment for up to two hours per day.

Why heat and dryness together are worse than either alone

Warm, dry air accelerates TEWL far more than cold, dry air, because heat increases the kinetic energy of water molecules, making evaporation faster. This is why the Tube in July can leave skin feeling tighter and more dehydrated than a cold January walk outside. The temperature is misleading. What matters to your skin is the vapour pressure gradient: how dry is the air relative to the moisture at your skin's surface.

What to do about it

  • Apply moisturiser immediately before your commute. A small decanted pot in your bag lets you reapply on arrival.
  • Use a rich rather than light formulation. Lighter, more water-based creams are more vulnerable to the Tube's desiccating environment.
  • Cleanse properly in the evening. After a Tube commute, a thorough but gentle cleanse — preferably oil-based — is important.

Protect your barrier through every commute

The Deep Nourishing Cream provides lasting lipid support that keeps the barrier resilient through the heat, dryness, and pollution of the London Underground.
