Hard Water in the UK: How It's Stripping Your Skin and What Actually Helps

If you live in London, the East Midlands, or much of the South East, you are almost certainly washing your face with hard water every day. Hard water is one of the most common — and most overlooked — contributors to dry, reactive, and dull skin in the UK.

What makes water 'hard'?

Hard water has a high concentration of dissolved minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium. Thames Water reports that London's water hardness typically exceeds 300mg/L of calcium carbonate, which is classified as 'very hard'. The recommended level for skin comfort is generally below 120mg/L.

What hard water actually does to your skin

The calcium and magnesium ions in hard water interact with cleanser ingredients — particularly surfactants — to form insoluble salts. This residue sits on the skin's surface and within the follicles, causing several problems:

  • pH disruption. Healthy skin is mildly acidic, with a pH of around 4.5–5.5. Hard water is alkaline (typically pH 7–8.5).
  • Lipid stripping. The alkaline environment breaks down the ceramides and fatty acids that hold the skin's barrier together.
  • Irritant accumulation. Calcium deposits left on skin can trigger inflammatory responses.

The case for plant oil cleansing

Oat-based and ghee-based cleansing balms offer a dual advantage in hard-water conditions. Colloidal oat soothes the inflammatory response that hard water can trigger, while washed organic ghee provides fatty acids that help restore the lipid content the alkaline environment strips away.

Cleanse without the hard-water damage

The Ghee & Oat Cleansing Balm emulsifies gently, rinses without residue, and leaves skin calm and barrier-intact — ideal for the UK's hard-water regions.
