Ghee in Beauty: From My Grandmother's Kitchen to Your Skincare Shelf

When people hear that our hero ingredient is ghee, there's usually a brief pause. The clarified butter they use to fry onions? That one? Yes — and also, emphatically, not exactly.

The ghee at the heart of Inherited Skincare isn't the same as what you'd spoon into a hot pan. It starts with organic, grass-fed ghee, but then it goes through a process that transforms it entirely — one that my grandmother Leela performed in her own kitchen, and one that Ayurvedic practitioners have used for centuries.

The Washing Process: What Is Shatadhauta Ghrita?

Shatadhauta ghrita translates roughly as "hundred-times-washed ghee." The traditional process involves kneading ghee repeatedly in cool water — each wash cycle drawing out impurities, transforming the texture, and producing something progressively lighter, smoother, and more skin-compatible than what you started with.

The result is extraordinary. What begins as the familiar golden, dense fat of culinary ghee becomes a white, almost whipped, feather-light cream that melts at body temperature. It carries none of the heaviness or greasiness you might expect. It absorbs. It nourishes. It feels like something designed specifically for skin — because, in a very real sense, it was.

From Kitchen Ritual to Cosmetic Safety

Taking an ingredient from a home kitchen practice to a CPSR-tested skincare formula is not a simple jump. It required working closely with cosmetic chemists to understand the composition of washed ghee at a molecular level: the fatty acid profile, the vitamin content, the behaviour at different temperatures and pH levels.

What we found confirmed what Leela already knew. Washed ghee is rich in vitamins A, D, E and K. It contains butyric acid, which supports the skin's protective barrier. Its fatty acid profile closely mirrors the skin's own natural lipids, which is why it absorbs so readily without disrupting the microbiome.

Every batch we use is tested and CPSR-certified. Every formula is made here in the UK, cruelty-free, to pharmaceutical-grade standards. The ingredient is ancient. The safety standards are current.

Why This Ingredient, and Not Something Synthetic?

Because Leela's skin is remarkable. Because the women in my family have been using this preparation for as long as anyone can remember, and none of them ever needed a dermatologist to explain their barrier function. Because when I looked at what was actually in the jar — chemically, nutritionally, functionally — I couldn't find a reason to replace it with something manufactured.

The best ingredients don't need to be invented. Sometimes they just need to be understood.
